The Pursuit of Antenna Happiness

We have been searching for the perfect backup antenna for our go boxes; you know, so in case we have nothing else antenna wise, we have this. We love the 2m J-pole made out of ladder line (like the ones made by N9TAXlabs.com) but in an effort to keep an open mind we pursued something we saw in a blog post: the jungle antenna. In that quest, we believe we have perfected the design while keeping the parts simple and obtainable, i.e. no 3d printing involved.

In a field test, we were able to talk to a repeater 38 miles away with next to no antenna elevation and not quite 50w of power. We present to you Radio Relief’s Mk 3 Mod 1 2m VHF Jungle Antenna. Feel free to download, print, and share liberally for the benefit of all.

Humble beginnings

We now have at our disposal eight (8) Kenwood TK7180 VHF commercial radios, which will be programmed to every active amateur radio repeater and simplex channel surrounding South Georgia and the Big Bend of North Florida. They will officially belong to Radio Relief Inc. once the paperwork clears the Georgia Secretary of State making us a charity. Until then, the current owner is proud to let us get them ready for use.

Our current plan for go-boxes is to acquire waterproof boxes from Harbor Freight (specifically the Apache 2800) and placing our radios in there.

More to come soon!
